100 dzieł Andy’ego Warhola, w tym rysunki, okładki, filmy i plakaty są opowieścią o narodzinach języka, który zmienił sposób patrzenia na obraz, sławę, produkt, ciało i media. Obiekty ukazują rozwój artysty – od rysunku, przez druk, okładki winylowych płyt, po film i eksperymenty z mediami cyfrowymi. Część prac jest pokazywana w Polsce po raz pierwszy. Jego sztuka celebrowała amerykańską obsesję konsumpcjonizmu, a jednocześnie była jej satyrą. Warhol mówił, że jest z innej planety.

Andy Warhol zatarł granice między tzw. sztuką wysoką a kulturą komercyjną, odcisnął piętno nie tylko na sztuce współczesnej, ale także na świecie marketingu i reklamy oraz samej koncepcji sławy. Jego sztuka zarówno celebrowała amerykańską obsesję konsumpcjonizmu, jak i była jej satyrą. Do dziś jest komentarzem na temat masowych mediów, kapitalizmu i sztucznej natury celebrytów. Pozostawił po sobie dziedzictwo, z którego czerpią tacy artyści, jak Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst i Takashi Murakami.

Ekspozycja ma ukazywać nie tyle światową ikonę, ile drogę, jaką przebył Warhol, budując swój język, wizerunek i legendę. Wystawą organizatorzy chcą przypomnieć jego prace z czasów, gdy był rysownikiem i ilustratorem, a także jak kształtował się jego charakterystyczny styl oraz w jaki sposób zacierał on granice między sztuką, reklamą, modą i kulturą masową.

October Gallery continues its season of Contemporary African Art, with a stimulating exhibition that pairs new works by Zimbabwean ceramicist, Xanthe Somers, with colourful paintings by Moroccan artist Yacout Hamdouch, who is exhibiting her work for the first time in the UK. In our second gallery space, a Spotlight on selected photographic works by internationally renowned photographer, James Barnor, complements this vital and energetic exhibition.

Informed by postcolonial insights, Somers introduces a new series, Carer, Cleaner, Mother, Maker, as she continues to explore her underlying themes: the work of women, the exploitation of cheap labour and the impact of eco-racist practices throughout the Global South. Her practice is situated within the political and historical context of an area in Zimbabwe deeply affected by the colonial construction of the dam that created the world’s largest artificial lake, Lake Kariba.

Somers weaves together three age-old disciplines – clay pottery, basket-making and textiles – to create a novel visual language. Each of these distinct traditions has long served as a powerful medium for storytelling. Yet, despite being shaped and refined by generations of women, the stories they carry have too often been overlooked. In these new works, Somers not only reimagines these crafts but also amplifies the voices and narratives woven within them. Inspired by weaving in Zimbabwe, her telling forms are hand coiled then disrupted by puncturing and deforming, before she revitalises them through the addition of meticulously painted details.

She comments, ‘I think weaving in general is a visceral way to speak about the domestic. These vessels while referencing grass basketry, also depict blankets, kitchen cloths and other humble textiles that quietly signal care within the home. Weaving becomes a wider metaphor for social cohesion, or lack thereof. While this tension is acutely felt in Zimbabwe, it resonates globally, where women’s work continues to be systematically undervalued.’

Yacout Hamdouch presents works from two recent series, Poetic Landscapes and Fertile Rainbows. Poetic Landscapes reflect on memory’s ability to capture moments suspended in time, which, even if rare and fleeting, can be both powerful and profound. In these works, Hamdouch traces the process by which what she calls ‘mirages’ develop.

Memory sculpts the mirage, which transforms into a landscape that becomes a window allowing us to frame in review those precious, transient moments. In Fertile Rainbows, the artist invites us to consider the complexity of human emotions that bind us all together, by uniting line, layer, form These subtly graded works evoke something indefinable, ambiguous and even elusive that offer us the outlines of a map upon which we might locate ourselves.

Since 2004, the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum has hosted the “Taiwan Ceramics Biennale.” The Biennale has advanced the brand image of Yingge and itself through an international call for artists and curators, a platform for displaying artwork, and related education and promotion events (e.g., symposiums, artist-in-residence programs, and demonstrations). All of the Biennale’s finalists and winners and their works of art have been highly valued and received great attention in the international realm of ceramic art.

While the Biennale is regarded as a display medium that presents current trends in contemporary ceramic art and provides new directions for ceramic art observation, artists are also being tested on how to embody their ideas and innovations. No matter what, a work of art, modern or traditional, will present its own contemporary form. The boundary between traditional utilitarian wares and artwork may also express a simple yet exquisite aesthetic style.
The 2024 Taiwan Ceramics Biennale accepted submissions from March 1 to August 31, 2023, and received 1,216 applications from 66 countries and five continents. The number of applications exceeded the last competition by 484 submissions, breaking the historical record of the Taiwan Ceramics Biennale since its inception in 2004. The competition featured top ceramic artists from around the world, making it exceptionally competitive domestically.
